October 28, 2007: Migration Day 16

Richard was today's lead pilot. His wing has an orange band.

YESSSSSSS! Richard launched with the birds and headed for Green County, the last stop in the state of Wisconsin. We'd like to report that all 17 took off with him and followed all the way — but that didn't happen. Today brought another tiring air rodeo and another hunt for #710, who went went astray to soar on thermals again. But reaching the Green County Stopover made this a good day.

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Question:
    (a) How many fly days so far? What's the total distance traveled so far? You may wish to see the list of reports for a quick overview. >>
(b-for-bonus) What are thermals >>? Crane #710 is doing what comes naturally when he soars on thermals, but why is it a problem for him to prefer thermals to the ultralight "parent" for his first journey south?
