Hello ILLINOIS! (+35.8 Miles)
November 1, 2007: Migration Day 20

Photo Operation Migration

Hooray! With good tailwinds, the migration blew out of Green County and across the border! Sixteen cranes made the 35.8 mile flight to Winnebago County in Illinois — including #710 and #727, who finally followed for a GREAT flight! Guess which of the crane-kids 714 broke away and went down early? It was crane #714, who was was easily found. She finished the day's journey safely crated away in the tracking van. The Class of 2007 had a GREAT day!

In the Classroom

  • Migration Math: Work It! (a) How far has the migration traveled so far? How many of the 1,250 miles remain?
(b-for-bonus) What is the average distance covered per day for the 20-day migration? For the days on which they have actually flown?
