Still Down in Gusty Winds (+0 Miles)
November 15, 2007: Migration Day 34

Exercising!
Photo Operation Migration

With gusty easterly winds, it's down day #5 in Morgan County, Indiana. The birds have covered 394.6 miles. They can exercise, but they are gaining no ground on their migration route today. The good news: tomorrow looks great for flying to the next stop: Muscatatuck NWR. Fingers crossed!

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Question: If the chick in the photo is about to take off, would it (a) be facing into the wind or (b) have the wind at its back? How do birds (and planes) position themselves to take off? See How Birds Fly for help in answering this question.
