December 12, 2007: Migration Day 61

Photo study: Find the cranes in the lead and third positions. What do you notice about their beaks?
Photo Operation Migration

Winds from the south make it day 6 on the ground in Cumberland County, Tennessee. They're inching up on last year's record NINE days down in this location. But the birds will be let out for exercise today, and soon they'll be on the wing again, continuing their first journey south.

Today's Journal Question: (a) Look at the photo above and locate the cranes in the first and the third position. What do you notice about their beaks? What might explain this?
(b-for-bonus)
What are two possible explanations for your observation about the birds' beaks? If this photo were taken on a day when the birds had to do a lot of flapping to gain altitude, which explanation do you think is most likely?
