No Go: Headwinds Still Blowing (+ 0 Miles )
November 4, 2008: Migration Day 19

Photo John Martineau, Operation Migration

ARGH! Same story: another very warm day with SSW winds at 5mph and six times that speed aloft. Green County isn't the only northern place having these unusually warm, windy conditions. How's the weather where you live? Progress has been stalled at 95 miles since Oct. 29, Day 13.

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Questions:
    (a) Yesterday's journal question told you how many down-days the team spent in Green county in past years. How many days have they been here today? How many days to go until they match the 2004 record?
  • (b-for-bonus) Perfect flight conditions can happen when a low pressure system is departing, with a high pressure ridge building behind it. In a low pressure system, winds blow counter clockwise and come from the south. In a high pressure, winds blow clockwise and come from the _______. How does this add up to flying conditions for the cranes and ultralights?
Like the pilots, you can watch the weather maps to see when the cranes and planes will be on the right side of the pressure system that brings favorable winds.

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
