GO
CRANES! It's a fine day
to fly, so goodbye, Chilton
County, Alabama. Again today they were able to skip a stop and land
in Pike County, the final stop in the state of Alabama! That's about
110 miles gained, and a place they didn't reach until January 12
on the
2008
migration.
With 923 miles gone, we can almost see it: Florida,
here they come!

In
the Classroom
-
(a) Migration
Math. Yesterday's lead pilot Brooke said the GPS
showed they were traveling at a
breathtaking 67
miles per hour ground speed! If cranes normally
fly about 37 mph, how strong was
yesterday's tailwind?
-
(b-for-bonus) What
do you learn about cranes from Brooke's
words about yesterday's events? "As we
approached giant smoke stacks from
two
massive power plants, the birds began to
balk at this intrusion into their world,
and an even ten broke back from the string
of 20 in protest. Richard moved in and picked
them up and after some coaxing they rejoined
the effort."
