Migration 2012 is off to a fantastic start for the Class of 2012 and their ultralight-airplane leaders. Since starting migration four days ago, the young cranes have covered three stops and gained 47 miles. With good weather today (Day 4), all six cranes again flew the distance, reaching Stopover #4 on their first journey south. They're now in Columbia County, Wisconsin—the final stop in Wisconsin is next!
"Everyone is thrilled with the performance of all six of the cranes and the early start they've been able to achieve," reports Operation Migration's Heather Ray from the office in Canada. Daily distances seem short in the beginning, but soon the birds will be covering many more miles each flight. How many stopovers remain before they cross into Illinois?
