Scott Weidensaul
Scott traps and bands vagrant western hummingbirds in the mid-Atlantic region, primarily eastern Pennsylvania. He is always at the ready when the phone rings and someone has an unusual bird they want him to see or band. He has banded birds for 25 years and hummingbirds since 2001. A naturalist and an author, Weidensaul has written more than two dozen books including Living on the Wind: Across the Hemisphere with Migratory Birds. His field work includes research on Saw-whet owls and a multi-state effort to understand the irruptions of Snowy owls.

Fred Bassett
Fred is a certified master bird bander who has worked with birds for over twenty years. He is driven to this work because there's always more fascinating things to learn about birds. He has banded more than 35,000 hummingbirds in more than 1,000 locations from Miami, Florida to Haines, Alaska. During the winter he documents western hummingbirds wintering in south Alabama and Florida, and the last fifteen winters he has captured more than 2,000 hummingbirds of ten different species in that area. In addition to Rufous hummingbirds, Fred has frequently seen Buff-bellied, Ruby-throated, Black-chinned, Calliope, Allen’s, Anna’s, Costas, Broad-billed and Broad-tailed hummers.
