Introduction
Through a game, explore the value of the global grid system in describing location. Select from these Guiding Questions to build understanding as students play each round of the game with a partner.
Activity
Game #1: Flat Surface
Show students Spot #1. Ask, "What words and measuring tools would help you describe where the spot is located?" Give students 3-5 minutes to work with their partners. Encourage students to record and share their descriptions.
Game #2: Flat Surface with Grid
Next show students Spot #2. Ask, "How can you use this grid system to describe where the spot is located?" Encourage students to record and share how the grid lines refined their descriptions of location.
Game #3: Sphere
Find an orange, grapefruit,
styrofoam ball, or another spherical object and mark a spot on its
surface. Follow steps described in Game #1.
Game #4: Sphere With Grid
Next, use a non-toxic marker to draw horizontal and vertical lines
to create a grid system on your sphere. Follow steps described in Game #2.
