How Many Monarchs in a Single Photo?
Arriving in Mexico, November 5, 2005
(Back
to start.)
- We
multiplied the number we counted in one square (135 butterflies) by
the total number of squares (80 squares).
- We
estimated a grand total of 10,800 butterflies in the picture!
There were
certainly more! We could see 135 butterflies easily, but many were so
high that they vanished from view. Try to imagine the butterflies flying
overhead. they were flying so high. Imagine the view ostanding It was
impossible to count the butterflies that were so high
How
wide is this patch of sky that contains 10,800+ butterflies? Estimate
the field of view using the size of one butterfly. (A monarch's wing
span about 10 cm wide.)
