About
this photo:
These monarchs are in a roost on the north shore
of Lake Ontario in Mississauga,
Ontario (43N,
-79W).
The butterflies in the lower right corner of the
picture are showing a mysterious behavior called
"flashing." They are opening and closing
their wings slowly each time a new butterfly joins
the roost beside them. Scientists don't know the
reason for this behavior but the monarchs appear
to be signaling. The movement of the wings —
and their bright orange color — can be seen
from far away. Look carefully. Compare the color
of monarch wings when they're open to their color
when closed. The butterflies are well hidden when
their wings are closed.
