How Far to Mexico from Hastings, Nebraska?

About this photo:
Great numbers of monarchs moved into Nebraska over the weekend. These butterflies needed a place to spend Sunday night. They found a backyard in Hastings, Nebraska (40.56 N, -98.37 W) to the delight of the people who live there:

"About six o'clock in the evening, I was outside in my backyard. I noticed quite a few Monarch butterflies and then realized they were all flying to one particular tree in our backyard. They were hanging in bunches on the ends of several branches. I got my camera and took many pictures. Because it was cloudy, they aren't as good as I would like, but aren't too bad either. We had a rain last night and I was afraid they might be gone this morning, but when I looked, many remained."

Look at all of the butterflies! This branch seems to be bending under their weight. How much would a branch full of butterflies weigh? Count the butterflies above and find out! (Assume that each monarch butterfly weighs about .500 grams.)

  • Do you think a ____ would bend a branch? Fill in the blank with something that weighs the same amount.
