Fall Migration Observation Methods
Count Monarchs at a Nectar Source

Monarchs must find nectar along their migration route all the way to Mexico. You can study migration where monarchs can find good nectar.

Where to find monarchs:

  • in your own butterfly garden;
  • along the roadsides;
  • in an abandoned field;
  • in a farmer's blooming clover or alfalfa field;
  • in a native prairie or other wild place;
Try to:
  • Count monarchs at the same time of day and for the same length of time each day. This way you can measure how the migration changes in a scientific way.
