Using Double-entry Journals with Citizen Science Observations

How to Use this Journal Page in Your Classroom
Rita describes how teachers can use the "double-entry journal" page template with the observer-comments provided in Journey North's weekly monarch migration news.

Purpose(?)

  • In each weekly migration update, you will find a full page of authentic field observations that were submitted during the past week. Students can gain a scientific knowledge by thinking carefully about these unique/individual observations. Over the course of year-long study...

Instructions

  • Have students select one of the quotes.
  • On the journal page, student records date, town, state/province, lat/long and marks the location of the sighting on the map.
  • Copy or paraphrase the comment.
  • What I learned...
  • What I wonder...

[RITA: Should we link to this fall's observer comments like this? We would add link when date arrives. This would show teachers what's coming and give good access to the comments. Otherwise they could get lost in backwater eddy linking between journal page and instructions.]
