Highlights In the Tulip Garden
Reported March
16 - 22, 2007
Orrville,
OH Nursery School 03/20/07
The
children were so excited just to get outside and after one person
spotted the first sprouted plant they all ran around the perimeter
of the garden looking for more. I estimate that about one third
of the
bulbs have emerged. This is great news because I was afraid that
the large local squirrel population might dig up many of the bulbs.
There
is little evidence of any rodent damage. It is terrific to see
the children's excitement in this long term project.

On Sunday our day length here in Oshkosh was twelve hours and two minutes.
Over the weekend our tulips emerged. Happy Vernal Equinox, sort of.

Tulips decided
to emerge quickly once the warm weather returned. We had a warm spell,
followed by a cold front, and then temperatures in
the sixty's. Nights are still cold, but the tulip garden is doing well.
We noticed other gardens in Idaho have emerged before ours. The gardens
are south of us and warm weather often is two to three weeks ahead of
those of us in the mountains. We are surrounded by mountains that still
have snow covered tops.

We saw our
first shoots coming up in the garden, but they are already covered
in snow again from a weekend snowstorm.

In Columbus Elementary School Mrs. DiCarmine's class has found out that
the tulips on the hillside have emerged only about 1 inch. The tulips
that were planted 20 days later have not emerged. It is very warm for
March - 60 degrees F, and we heard the birds singing. We saw a sparrow
building its nest under the eave of our school.

The winter
has been very strange this year. In New Jersey we have been experiencing
the warmest December and January ever. Our tulip bulbs are
very confused. First the weather is warm (60 degrees F), then we had
a very severe ice and snow storm, temperatures dropped to the teens.
The tulips that we planted last year, emerged about a month ago. After
the snow storm they began to grow again. On Wednesday, March 14th, 3
of this year's bulbs just began to emerge. Today March 16th it is snowing
again. We are hoping that this will not confuse our bulbs! They are predicting
warmer weather for next week.
Montclair, NJ 03/14/07
The first tulips, about 12, emerged from our garden on March 14. However,
on March 16 we received about 6 inches of heavy, icy snow.
