Data Only and a New Map

Highlights:
Springtime weather is coming in fits and starts across the northern latitudes. Gardeners who were cheering on their tulip gardens are suddenly worried about the weather.
In Minocqua, WI gardeners wrote, “Three tulips emerged in our garden this week but a winter storm is on its way. It's supposed to bring 4-8 inches of snow and lows in the teens for the next five nights!”

How many gardens are stuck in the cold (and snow)?

This week we will visit a special garden at Seven Oak Middle School, in Lebanon, Oregon. Science students have experimented with some very creative technology. Here is their report to Journey North:
Robotic Remote Sensing Vehicle
“This year, two students in our class, Sierra and Gabrielle, wanted to figure out a way to raise student awareness about the importance of water conservation at our school and in our community. Using their experience with the LEGO NXT robotics system, they developed, built, and programmed a LEGO NXT remote sensing vehicle that operates in our school Journey North garden.”

Journal Question: The Power of Description
Imagine you had to describe today’s tulip map to someone who couldn't see it. Could you describe where spring’s temperatures have arrived and where they are yet to come?

Try This!

  • First write the description in your Journal.
  • Next, share it with a classmate.
  • Third, combine the best of both descriptions for your final copy and share it with the class.
