Nelson Rural School’s Tulips Have Finally Emerged!

Wow!
It’s been six long months since we planted our tulips, but
finally on April 14th they emerged. We had another snowstorm on
Easter weekend, so imagine our surprise when we visited our garden
on Tuesday and saw the little red tips coming up through the snow.

Imagine our surprise to return to school after the Easter Break and
another snowstorm, to find our tulips emerged! |

Last
week when we visited our garden, we measured the snow and there was
still about 23 cm on top of the garden. We did have a few nice days
and some rain, so our snow melted fast. We thought that it took a
little longer for the snow to melt because it did not get enough sun,
as the school was blocking it. |
|
We
had another very long and snow filled winter. We had storms, blizzards,
ice pellets, freezing rain, extremely cold days and lots and lots
of snow. We think the tulips are very strong to survive all of that
and still grow. |

Again
this year we are comparing our garden with two other Grade 2 classes
at St. John’s Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas. We have certainly
found a lot of differences with our weather and planting times.
They planted theirs in January, we did ours in October. Their tulips
emerged in February and ours emerged in April. The garden in Texas
has already bloomed and we are not sure when ours will. |
We
can’t believe they emerged through the snow! Now we can’t
wait to see them bloom! When do you think it will be? |
