The first grades in the Lewiston Public Schools do a thematic study of
Monarch butterflies in the Fall. We write to students in the summer
and have them bring a Monarch caterpillar that the find with an adult.
These caterpillars are put in a large net tube and fed milkweed daily.
When the eventually emerge as butterflies we band and release them to
join the other Monarchs heading for Mexico. We teach an across the
curriculum unit that incorporates reading, writing, science and inquiry
skills. We have tied the outcomes in this unit to the Minnesota
Graduation Standards and have created assessments and checklists to
record student growth. We would like to incorporate the use of the
Internet in this study. We'd welcome any ideas that are out there!
