Highlights: Population Climbing as Migration Reaches the End

More than 50 new sightings were added to the map this week, and we continued to receive sightings from the big week before. We have now collected 94 sightings from the single week of May 19th - 25th, setting this spring's record. The chart to the right plots sightings per week. Notice how clearly it reflects the building population. Of this spring's 500 sightings, nearly 150 occurred in just two weeks! Play the animated map back and forth to see the impact.

Special thanks to Mr. Don Davis of Toronto, Ontario, for gathering so many of the sightings from Canada! As proof of his language talents, we even have comments in French about sightings he collected from Quebec.

  • You can read all comments from observers in the sightings database.
  • Add three new provinces and one state to your Prediction Chart.
  • Our northernmost monarch has reached latitude 50 N. Can you name the province in which it was found?

The Monarch Migration Continues: Please report your sightings!

Watch for brief weekly updates during the month of June. We will continue to track the monarchs until they've expanded across their breeding range.

In the next few weeks the map will show that the monarch population is increasing more than it will show the monarchs traveling great distances. For example: Three eastern U.S. states have not reported monarchs yet. (Can you find them? DE, VT, NH) There are certainly a few monarchs in these states. However, it may take another generation for monarch numbers to build before any are seen and reported.
