2023 International Monarch Monitoring Blitz
Get ready! Journey North is again a partner of the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz. Report your observations of monarchs (all stages) and milkweed to Journey North from July 28 – August 6.
Due to monarchs’ large range during the summer months, volunteer observations are critical to our collective understanding of monarch populations and habitat at this time of year. Your observational reports help us better understand the monarch butterfly’s breeding productivity, range, and timing in North America. We thank you in advance for your participation!

Summer Monarch News: July 19, 2023
In monarch news, we are seeing more and more summer activity reported via our Journey North observers. Specifically, there have been a number of recent "first" observations of monarchs coming in from Ontario. According to Chip Taylor, Founder and Director of Monarch Watch, these monarchs likely are the offspring of a cohort of monarchs that arrived just south of these locations over a month ago; they are second generation monarchs that will be the parents of the migratory third generation that will start moving south in August.
Check out our monarch maps as well as the highlighted reports linked in this update to learn more, and please remember to continue reporting your observations—before, after, and especially during the Blitz.
