Still Waiting For Spring
Tracking continues through winter to document where hummingbirds are present. We are all waiting for the start of spring migration for hummingbirds.
Sightings Continue During the Winter Months
Journey North citizen scientists continue to document overwintering hummingbirds and to note when "newcomers" or migrating hummingbirds appear at feeders. As one Journey North volunteer comments, late winter snowfall and freezing temperatures in many regions of the United States have not been good for a few overwintering hummingbirds.
As Magi noted in Snow Hill, MD: "It is with a sad heart that I have to report that my Ruby Throat hummingbird finally succumbed to the freezing temperatures Thursday night, Jan 31st. She had become like a pet to us. She made it Thursday morning when it was 14 degrees here in Snow Hill, but another night of below freezing temperatures proved to be too much for her. She was a tough little bird." (01/31/2019)
