There's Still Time to Plant Tulips

November 8, 2021 by Team Journey North

Plant tulips soon! Join students and gardeners across North America in planting a Journey North Tulip Test Garden to monitor seasonal change in a scientific way. Next spring, when tulips emerge and bloom, participants will report their observations and data. This project is a great way to spark curiosity in students.

"We planted 27 tulip bulbs today following the proper protocol. We also planted 27 more bulbs changing one factor for each test." Comment & photo: Sue in Short Hills, NJ (11/02/2021)

Plant Tulips and Track the Seasons

Join students and gardeners across North America in planting a Journey North Tulip Test Garden to monitor seasonal change in a scientific way. One garden at a time, the relationship between climate, geography, and the arrival of spring is revealed.

Welcome!

There are now 57 Tulip Test Gardens planted. Welcome!

Jennifer in Newtown Square, PA: "The kindergarteners planted 17 tulips on a beautiful fall morning in the school garden. We spent time learning about tulips and looking closely at the bulbs before planting." (10/28/2021)

Rana in Cleveland, OH: "Birchwood 2nd graders planted their tulips today. Beautiful fall morning. Rains made for easy digging. Found lots of worms and a grub. Hopefully the deer won't get to them in the spring!" (10/28/2021)

Laura in Ladue, MO: "MICDS first grade students planted their very first Journey North Tulip garden. We planted 40 tulip bulbs 5 inches deep in our science courtyard. We can't wait to see what the 2022 spring brings!" (11/05/2021)

Melanie in Burke, VA: "First graders planted 75 tulips." (11/05/2021)

Spark Curiosity

Planting a Tulip Test Garden is a great way to spark curiosity in students. And it's fun! Linda in Anchorage, AK shared a few comments from her students after a recent planting.

"Planting tulips was fun as a group project."

"The bulbs looked like a variety of vegetables such as onions, garlic, turnips, and radish."

"I like using tools I'd never used before like the bulb planter."

"I hope we do this again next fall."
