Happy Spring!

Warmer weather brought beautiful red tulip blooms to many Test Gardens this week.

BEAUTIFUL!!! My tulips have bloomed! I was watching them all day yesterday and they looked ready to open but it took until this morning. The cage is to protect them from the rabbits and deer.” St. Paul, Minnesota on May 4th. Photo by Cindy Schmid.

Tulips and Temperature

What is the relationship between temperature and plant growth? Warmer temperatures from the heartland to the Northeast this week brought excitement to the tulip Test Garden project. As on class exclaimed, “For the first time in a long time, we did not need jackets to check on our tulips!”

“All of our tulips blossomed on the same day! We have 18 beautiful, large red flowers in the garden in front of our school!” Westmoreland, New Hampshire on May 4th.

“Red festive blossoms opened on Friday, May 4th.The red is impressive and we noticed we are one of the last dots in the USA! Maine has a long winter season and spring just arrived! Fun project!” Ellsworth, Maine.

“A late spring here. Tulips were buried under ice and snow until a week ago. Then temps warmed and they shot up, now about 5-6 in.” Mark dale, Ontario on May 1st.

Still Waiting

Most of the Test Garden tulips have bloomed, and now we wait for the most northern gardens to show their color. When will Journey North’s loyal gardeners from Shageluk, Alaska, Edmonton, Alberta, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan see their tulips this year?  Any predictions?
