"How do owl eggs keep their heat while sitting in an unheated nest?"

The Great Horned owl downy feathers are really warm. And their body
temperature gets up to 37 degrees Celsius; sometimes higher. That's 98.6
degrees Fahrenheit! (The body heat of a human.) The owls have feathers on
their feet, all the way to their talons! So when they sit on the nest their
feathers cover all around the eggs so the eggs are nice and warm. If they
are in a nest that is lined with leaves then the leaves will prevent the heat
from escaping. And if they're in a hollow hole of a tree, then they are
protected from the wind, and the wind doesn't go up through the trunk so the
eggs won't freeze from below. She never leaves the nest. And if it's cold
outside the feathers also insulate her.
