Rubies are Here!

March 16, 2018 by Mary Hosier

They're here! Ruby-throated hummingbirds have been reported in Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, and Georgia this week.

“Today we saw 3 at our feeders. This one was feeding right before dusk,” wrote Brenda from Kinder, Louisiana on March 8th.

Moving North

Hummingbirds are slowly moving north in Gulf Coast states. Check the map to watch the progress of the spring migration. Keep your eyes open and report your sightings.

“Young shining male. Feeding at feeder every 10 to-12 minutes.” Galveston, Texas on March 12th.

“Fresh feeder put out. He/she came within the hour.” Lake Jackson, Texas on March 12th.

“Keeps coming back to the same feeder even tho we have 15 to choose from.” Saint Martinsville, Louisiana on March 11th.

“First sighting at today. Feeding on honeysuckle and at the feeder.” Quitman, Georgia on March 10th.

Special thanks to our hummingbird expert Lanny Chambers for sharing sighting data for the first weeks of the migration.

Western Species

Rufous have been reported in British Columbia. Multiple reports of Black-chinned, Anna’s, Costa’s, and Rufous Hummingbirds from Arizona and California. However a big weather front is spinning into the Pacific Northwest this week bringing wind, rain, and snow. Hold tight recent migrants!

“First male (Rufous) stopped by this evening,” Bellingham, Washington on March 14th.

“One day later than the first arrival of 2017, also a male.” Delta, British Columbia on March 12th.
