News: Advancing Northward

As Ruby-throats continue moving northward, watch for spring behaviors. Observers shared details of hummer activity at their flowers and feeders this week.

"Third day now that feeder has been up. A male perches atop the shepherd's hook keeping an eye on his feeder. Noticed a female RT several times today. And two feeding at the same time," reported Ted in New Kensington, Pennsylvania on May 3rd.

"Observed a male ruby-throat driving off another hummer from my deck. They were too fast to tell if the second one was a female or another male. He then displayed briefly before flying off to perch in a nearby tree," wrote Margaret in Hendersonville, North Carolina on May 3rd.

"Saw the 1st hummingbird of the year in our yard this am. They were busy getting nectar from the azalea blossoms," reported Terri from Lancaster, Pennsylvania on May 5th.

Other Western Species
A late spring snowstorm blanketed regions of the Rocky Mountains causing some miserable conditions for all. Luckily many hummingbird feeders were kept filled.

"It's snowing here; making them more food," reported Ruthann in Eden, Utah on April 28th.
