News: Sightings Surge

Cold Canadian winds shifted this week — opening the gates for a flush of sightings in Maine and Nova Scotia. Where Ruby-throats are on territory, nesting has begun.

"Two males made it here in the gusty wind today. Latest date ever, but glad they are beginning to arrive!" wrote Teri from Digby, Nova Scotia on May 9th.

"Male at feeder at 7:30 this morning. A few days later than normal," Elizabeth reported from Tuftonboro, New Hampshire on May 10th.

"Feeder has been up for two weeks. Finally one came right up to it! Haven't seen any males yet," observed Bernadette in Hyde Park, Vermont on May 9th.

Other Western Species
Migrating Black-chinned, Broad-tailed, and Calliope hummingbirds are making their way north into the mountain states and provinces.

"We seem to have had a fresh wave of migrating Black-chinned hummingbirds arrive this weekend," reported Debra in Texas on May 8th.
