How Far North Do Monarchs Migrate in Canada? Name the Provinces

Migration Highlights

Bienvenue Monarques!
Canadians welcomed the butterflies' return this week as large numbers of monarchs reached the final nation of their tri-national migration. Among the places where monarchs appeared was Canada's capital city of Ottawa, Ontario.

Which New States and Provinces?
People from five new states and provinces reported monarchs this week. Which ones? Use these geographic clues to find out (then add them to your prediction chart):

  • Canada's largest province, and the only province whose official language is French.
  • One of Canada's three Maritime provinces, and the only one with the initials "N.B."
  • The "Granite State" whose motto is "Live Free or Die."
  • The two states that became states in 1889 and are divided into two time zones (central and western).

What Will Happen Next?

  • United States: Only two eastern U.S. states are still waiting for monarchs. Can you name them?
  • Canada: Study the map on this week's Journal Page and figure out how many more Canadian provinces will see monarchs this spring.

Slideshow: Hunting for the First Milkweed of Spring >>

It's fun to hunt for milkweed in the spring. It can be hiding right in front of your eyes. The first milkweed I saw this spring was already two inches tall before I found it. I had been looking every day!

Come on a photo safari and see if you can find the milkweed that's hiding in these pictures.

News from Mexico: The Monarchs Leave and The Swallows Return

"Perhaps you should know that only some weeks after Monarchs leave us in March, the beautiful Swallows come to us. We love to have them and hear them bickering early --still dark-- in the mornings," begins Estela Romero.

Symbolic Migration: Kids Are Waiting, Please Report!

Over 60,000 children sent symbolic monarchs to Mexico. So far, 15,686 butterflies have been reported to the map. This means nearly 45,000 children are still waiting to find their butterflies! Teachers: Please help by reporting the butterflies you received. Thank you!
