News from Mexico by Estela Romero: Thousands Remain!
(English/Español)

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Dear Friends:

I am just back from El Rosario Sanctuary which I reached at about 2 p.m. today.

To my surprise, I found still thousands of Monarchs who seem to be in no hurry to leave! They have all moved from their original place, Llano Los Conejos, which is now empty. They are concentrated about 500 meters to the west in "Llano Las Balsitas."

Fotos 1,2,3 show how thousands of Monarchs are still crowding around 25 trees in Llano Las Balsitas. There starts to be a considerable number of dead Monarchs on the floor.

Foto 4 shows there is still time for mating.

These boys in Foto 5, who already recognize me as the Journey North Mail-Girl, said to me. "We will have Monarchs for one or perhaps even two more weeks, since this year the Sanctuary was crowded. On the other hand, temperatures are still not reaching the hottest days, and that allows Monarchs to stay a little longer."

Meanwhile, the arrival of swallows to our region announce that the final massive leaving of Monarchs is imminent.

Many greetings from your friend and colleague,

Estela Romero
Angangueo, Michoacán.
