News: Monarch Butterfly Fund: Conserving the Migration

Each fall the monarch butterfly travels thousands of miles to spend the winter in Mexico. This is the longest migration of any insect!

The migrating monarchs find winter shelter in evergreen forests located on only 12 mountaintops in central Mexico. Because of deforestation, these forests are disappearing, and putting the monarch migration into peril.

This year over 400 Journey North classrooms sent contributions of $7,573 to support the projects and initiatives that will protect the monarchs’ winter habitat. Your support helps fund the Monarch Butterfly Fund (MBF *). fall2001_034
MBF projects include habitat restoration and reforestation, research, monitoring, and educational programs.

* The Monarch Butterfly Fund is the result of a merger between the Michoacán Reforestation Fund (MRF) and the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Foundation (MBSF). This unique partnership brings together highly dedicated scientists from Canada, the United States, and Mexico to work on the complex issues of monarch conservation.

This year we sent 56,598 symbolic monarchs and $7,573 to Mexico for conservation work.

If each little paper ambassador carried a portion of MBF funds, how much would each carry?

(A 13.4¢ contribution on their journey south!)
