Letter from Estela Romero: Overwintering Season Is Near

Published: 10/25/2022

Dear friends,

Within only a few days, the miraculous migrating monarchs will reach their ancestral overwintering home in the unique oyamel fir forests in the Sierra Madre mountain range in Central Mexico.

Millions of these butterflies shall announce their arrival by flying in countless directions as they traverse the foothills of the Sierra Madres, before they finally spot and rush up to their final roosting destinations.

Communities situated around the monarch sanctuaries will see part of the triumphant arrival as many monarchs pass, nectaring on flowers and obtaining minerals by sipping stream water. However, millions of monarchs will not be seen, as they arrive at higher altitudes and use migration corridors that remain part of the mysterious nature of these amazing creatures.

The Oyamel forests, standing like pharaohs at 10,000 -feet in elevation, are ready to receive another of nature’s royalty, the monarch butterfly.
