Tulip test gardens: How to participate

Last updated: January 22, 2026

Learn how to participate in Journey North's tulip test garden project with this quick guide.

Journey North's tulip test garden project is a great way to showcase seasonal and climate changes across the globe to kids and adults alike.

With this project, you report when you plant your tulip bulbs in the fall, then report when they emerge and bloom in the spring.

It's as easy as 1-2-3

Step 1: Before you plant, register for a Journey North account and order tulip bulbs. You can also report your observations as a guest using Journey North, so an account isn't a necessity, but we'd love to have you create an account to track all of your future sightings!

Step 2: Plant your garden. If you're doing this activity with students, have them assess what sites are available, as well as how they'll work for tulips, considering shade/sun availability, soil type, and how much water they'll receive. Once you've selected a site, it's time to plant your bulbs!

Step 3. Report what you observe to Journey North! Report when you plant your tulips, as well as when they emerge and bloom. Historically, the project has taken place with red emperor tulip in particular, but it's not that important. There are two reporting categories in the Journey North system: one for red emperors and one for all other tulips.

You can view Journey North's maps to see the activity around you. Take a look and see whose tulips are emerging and blooming around the continent.
