Bloom'n Snow

April 11, 2018 by Mary Hosier

Blooming today, snowing tomorrow. Will spring weather ever arrive in the north?

“The snow has melted at last in Northborough, MA. (More on the way tomorrow, so we were lucky to get a peek of our thriving tulips today!)” April 5th.

It was another colder than average week for a large swath of North America. Temperatures in the Midwest and central Canada were as much as 20 degrees below normal for the first week in April.  Across the continent only 2 emerging gardens were reported last week. Experimental results are in for citizen scientists in New Hampshire. What have you learned from your experimental plantings?

“Only 1 of 10 tulip bulbs planted upside down has emerged. None of the tulips planted in the pot have emerged. Only 5 of 10 planted without a tunic have emerged. 7 of 10 tulips planted only 3 inches deep emerged 3 weeks ago before the snow storm..” Chesterfield, New Hampshire reported late March.

“Our tulips finally bloomed! Our winter here in St. Louis has been bitterly cold. Our tulips were covered in sleet last week, but it didn’t seem to affect their beautiful blooms.”  St. Louis, Missouri on April 9th.

“We are finally seeing signs of spring! First graders are observing our tulip bulbs beginning to grow even though we have snow here in Salem.” Massachusetts on April 4th.

“We have had a warm winter and spring, and our tulips bloomed very early this year.” Colorado Springs, Colorado on April 8th.
