Anchorage Emerges!

April 18, 2018 by Mary Hosier

A brief warm front brought blooms to gardens and some relief from the cold, however another blast of winter was right behind it!

“We were right. The tulips are in full bloom now that we are back from spring break. A little sunshine is all they needed.” Wilkeson, Washington on April 9th.

April Snow

The calendar says spring, but some gardens are once again covered with snow. Fortunately, tulips are resilient and designed to survive short periods of cold and snow—even when blooming!

“No snow on the flower bed or tulip garden today, and the tulips are up! However tonight we’re getting 12 ” of snow to cover them up!” Lewiston, Montana on April 9th.

“Across the country we have seen evidence of a very cold and stormy spring. Here is ours: At 7:00am yesterday, our tulips looked more like Snow Cones.” Salem, New Hampshire on April 16th.

“After winter weather and snow covered buds last weekend, all of our tulips have bloomed! ” Mount Vernon, Indiana on April 9th.

Finally Blooming

Gardeners now have proof that some cold weather may slow down growth in the tulip garden, but it won’t stop Red Emperors from blooming.”

“Two of our tulips have bloomed and the rest are close. They did get hit by rough winds and a freeze but they are still hanging on.” Stillwater, Oklahoma on April 9th.

“Our tulips finally bloomed after a very cold winter and spring. This is several weeks later than usual.” St. Loius, Missouri on April 12th.
