Hopeful Signs of Spring

April 25, 2018 by Mary Hosier

Test Gardens are emerging and blooming around the world and bringing good cheer.

“Finally! After an unusually cold spring, our tulips have bloomed, three weeks later than last year. We’ve had to cover them several times in the past two weeks to protect them from the frost and late spring snow.” Creve Coeur, Missouri.

From the first tulip tips emerging in Ontario, Alaska, and Estonia to the glorious gardens in bloom in Germany, Massachusetts, and Nebraska students are celebrating spring across the Northern Hemisphere.

Slowly Emerging

“Our tulips are slowly growing. This morning’s frost isn’t helping but we do have our fence up to keep the deer out. Hoping to see red blossoms before our last day of school on May 25th. No buds visible yet.” Kodiak, Alaska on April 16th.

“Tulips are pushing through melting snow.” Longbow Lake, Ontario on April 20th.

“Third graders at Highwood Hills Elementary found 19 emerged tulips!” St. Paul, Minnesota on April 24th

Finally Blooming

“We planted 46 bulbs and many have emerged but only 14 have bloomed beautifully. We have had a very cold start to our spring, the temperature has been below normal almost everyday.” Salem, Massachusetts on April 20th.

“The blooms were enormous. We could see all the parts of the flower inside.” Ardmore, Pennsylvania on April 16th.
