Seeing Red!

May 2, 2018 by Mary Hosier

"Seeing Red" has a mixed meaning this week when some students exclaimed joy at their colorful blooms and others felt disappointment in their gardens.

“Today the weather reached 68 degrees and our tulips continue to bloom!” Students reported from Salem, Massachusetts on April 24th.

Spring Has Sprung

Spring weather continues with see-saw temperatures in many locations. One gardener in Minnesota wrote that they’ve gone from winter to summer in one day this week. As temperatures warm up tulips emerge and go from bud to bloom.

“Big News! Our tulips have finally emerged! After a very long, cold and snowy winter and spring so far, we thought the snow would never melt.  Spring is really here now in Miramichi!” New Brunswick on April 25th.

“Our tulips bloomed red. The tulip flowers opened up and there was yellow and black inside. Inside they had purple pollen. We put the pollen on our papers.” Gilmanton, New Hampshire on April 30th.

“We have 5 tulips blooming now. Some are ready to bloom because we can see the red. We have 5 more that have buds, but no red showing.” Ashland, Ohio on April 26th.

Delicious Tulips

“Some time in the last week critters came and bit off all of our tulip bulbs.” Cleveland Heights, Ohio on April 24th.

NO TULIPS YET! Due to the taste buds of our Red Squirrels we found out that Red Squirrels crave Red Emperor tulip bulbs.” Shageluk, Alaska on April 24th.
