Maps
and Data |
Just
a short report this week to give you the latest data for our birds
and news from the New Hampshire eagle project. We will also take you
to a place along the Merrimack River where we will look at some eagle
habitat. Satellite technology offers us a valuable look into habitats
the birds use so we can learn how best to protect them.
The eagles continue to hold steady. Will this be a typical year when
the birds start heading North in March?

A Short Lesson on Habitat for Night Roosting Eagles |
In
June, 2007 the Interior Department took the American bald eagle off

The
bald eagle is still protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and
the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
Night roosts, where the eagles perch at night, are some of the
most critical habitats to wintering bald eagles, especially in
severe winter weather (P. Nye).

From the Scientists |
The
NH Eagles (No Eagles,
Yet!)
So
far, we have had good luck attracting coyotes, raccoons, crows, and
even other deer to our bait on the Merrimack River. And we have had
eagles perching near our bait and flying up and down the river past
our site. Recently, my colleagues and I put our heads together to
think of what "adjustments" we
could make to try to convince the eagles to feed at our bait piles.
Here are some of the things that we tried ... >> |

Where
are the eagles? Study the map this week for clues. Does
it look like they're waiting out the winter?
Not
much movement yet. Stay tuned... |
