Rufous Questions >                Rubythroat Questions >

Highlights: Great Leaping Hummers
A great leap forward! That's the only way to describe the Rubythroat migration this week. "Hello spring!" says one observer. "Huddled in the crabapple tree, she appears just larger than the newly emerging leaves," explains another. A third describes this scene: "They're blasting to and from the same nesting site, and not at all shy to get in my face as if to say, 'Where's the nectar?'" Have you spotted a hummer in your haven yet? When you do, don't forget to tell us about it!

Meanwhile, something's changing in the Rufous migration. They're still pushing north, but some seem to be wandering inland. Next week we'll explore why — and we'll take a close-up peek at some nestlings in their cozy homes.

In the meantime, discover what some keen-eyed observers shared this week:

News! Lanny's Rubythroat Returns

Lesson >>

One special Rubythroat pushed north with the hordes this past week! Did you already predict when Lanny Chambers' hummer would land in St. Louis, Missouri? How close was your prediction to the actual date of April 20?

Thanks to Lanny for being a good scientist and tracking his first hummingbird arrival for 14 years. Was this hummer right on time? You be the judge!
