Highlights from the Migration Trail
What Can You Learn from Observers?

(Back to Today's Update - May 1, 2008)

What can you learn about hummingbirds and their migration based on what observers report? Read this week's highlights, then discuss the question at the end.

Warfordsburg, Pennsylvania: We saw our first hummer at 5:30 this evening. One of "ours" because he hovered everywhere that a feeder hung last year.

Atco, New Jersey:
With much anticipation and worry because he was 3 days late this year, our little hummer arrived. Welcome back!

Grand Haven, Michigan: A ruby-throated hummingbird flew at the bedroom window looking for the feeders out front. We only had them at the side of the house so far.

Carlisle, Indiana:
I saw my first Male ruby-thoated today seem to be one that is coming back each year. He was not afraid of me.

Columbia, KY: I purchased two more smaller type feeders. Maybe this will help with the male who visited our single feeder last year who wouldn't allow any of the females to feed.

Think: What do all of these observers seem to believe about migrating hummingbirds? What questions do you have?
