Dear Friends,
The monarchs season is at its peak right now in Angangueo. Both nearby sanctuaries, El Rosario and Sierra Chincua attract hundreds of people from México and around the world who are eager to appreciate the phenomenon of monarchs overwintering in Central México. Temperatures rise little by little and, as it turns out, we might have a very hot spring and summer this year. The sun seems much brighter and intense than what I remember in previous years.
However, this season does not feel that cheerful and optimistic for most people because we are aware of the severe decrease in the numbers of monarchs that are overwintering in our mountains this year.
Today, take a look at some of the businesses and jobs from which many families have made a living from monarch tourism for many years, and upon which most of them have invested and made a life project.
In all, an important part of the last two generations of us natives in this region could not easily imagine an alternative for making a living if monarchs were not part of our life and our region as they have been during the last 30 years.
The thought of a decrease in tourism worries all of us and is an additional reason we want to do whatever necessary to improve environmental conditions so that monarchs can continue their famous migration to our region into the future.
Until next week,
Estela Romero
