According to Journey North observers, robins entered the Yukon and spread across Alberta last week but most of Alaska is still waiting. In honor of Earth Day, we salute Rachel Carson and her landmark book, Silent Spring. The spring song of robins was silenced by pesticides and Carson motivated people to listen.

The Migration: What's Happening Now & What to Watch For

What's Happening Now
The first robin was heard singing in the Yukon at Whitehorse last week, and in Grand Prairie and Edson, Alberta, too. No robins have yet to arrive at our five remaining Observation Posts in Alaska. (See map.) In Homer, Alaska, the ground is still covered in 3 feet of snow but the days are getting warmer and longer:

"Our daylight stretches from 6:30 am til 9:30 pm. The early migrants should be showing up soon, and we are hoping to see and hear our first robin by May 6th. Wish us luck!"

What to Watch For
Predict when the first robins will reach interior Alaska!
From Early Bird Contest Headquarters in Shageluk, Alaska, comes this update:

"NO ROBINS YET! But we saw our first Canadian Geese, April 16 which does mean we should see Robins soon."

Based on the records students have keep for the past decade, when do you predict robins will reach Shageluk, Alaska at latitude 62N?

Northern Observation Posts

When will robins reach the remaining reaches of Alaska? There's still time to send your prediction for the "Early Bird Contest."

From Elm Leaves to Robins

Explore: From Elm Leaves to a Silent Spring

In her book, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson wrote about a chain of events that ended in tragedy for robins. It all began because people wanted to protect American elm trees from a deadly disease. They sprayed the elm trees with an insecticide that contained a powerful chemical called DDT. The chemical pesticides ended up killing backyard robins, but long after the elm trees were sprayed. Follow the robin’s food chain to see what happened, and read about Rachel Carson's courage to voice her concerns.
