On the equinox the Sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal.

The direction of the tilt of the Earth does not change – the two hemispheres point towards the same position in space at all times.

What changes as the Earth moves around the Sun is the position of the hemispheres in relation to the Sun – the Northern Hemisphere points towards the Sun during northern summer and away from the Sun during the northern winter.
