Cross-Border Partners:
Students Exchange Hummingbirds and More

Drawings: Students in Ms. Realpozo's fifth grade class, Merida, Mexico

Hummingbirds have been on the minds of fifth graders at two schools: Mary E. Volz school in Runnemede, New Jersey, and the Piaget School in the Yucatan region of Merida, Mexico. Rubythroats pass through the Yucatan each year before heading north to breed (have young). The Mexican students who live in that area became e-pals with students in the States who eagerly await the spring arrival of hummingbirds.

Look at the map below. It shows the location of the two schools. Then look below the map to learn more.

In October, Volz School students learned new words related to hummingbirds, watched Journey North slideshows, and talked about what they learned. Next, they made colorful paper hummingbirds, like the ones shown on top. They sent these on a fall "migration" to their Mexican e-pals. Soon the students in New Jersey will receive paper hummers that their e-pals in Mexico made in honor of the spring migration.

What else did the e-pals exchange? PowerPoint slideshows about life in their regions. Guess what they discovered: Although the e-pals are thousands of miles away, they like many of the same things. This includes music groups, such as the Jonas Brothers, foods, wrestlers, and — of course — hummingbirds!
