News: 48 Gardens Emerged

Take a look across the Atlantic Ocean, and you will find some green. The tulip garden in Naples, Italy has emerged! This garden's global address is (40.83N, 14.23E).
Challenge: Find some gardens in North America located near the same latitude (40.8N) as the Italian garden. What do you notice? Have they emerged? Study the location of the Italian garden. What factors might have caused these tulips to emerge?

This week we find 48 emerging gardens. Where will the next tulips emerge? Study the map and make your prediction.

Gardeners Comment

Gardeners comment on unusual events:

  • "While outside exploring the role of the sun in providing heat and light, several students discovered that one of our tulip bulbs has emerged. We had a very warm week and predict that we will soon see several more tulips emerging."  -Montclair, NJ 02/11/09
  • "Two tulips have emerged. Approximately an inch of each of the tulips is exposed. The weather conditions are sunny, cool (in the 60s) and a light SW breeze."  - Morehead City, NC 02/12/09
  • "This is our school's third year planting bulbs, we've never had shoots appear so early in the year. We've just experienced one of the coldest Januarys in the area's history."  - Alexandria, VA 02/11/09
Explore: Are You a Weather Watcher?

Wow! Did anyone else feel some of that "spring-like" weather last week? Across the eastern half of the continent snow and ice melted, brought about by a mid-winter thaw. How were you affected? Were you one of 20 or more gardens who noticed their tulips emerge?

Study the map carefully, and then describe it to one of your classmates.
