A Monthly Reminder to Go Outside!

It's a Wonder Out There!
"All but one nest of barn swallows has left our barn for their journey south. I miss them." writes a Michigan observer on 08/29. In the same week, another observer in Florida reports, "The number of barn swallows passing through is just amazing!"

Did YOU know that swallows are among the first migrants in the autumn? Where do you think they go when they leave their breeding grounds in the north? Write what you think...THEN check out the map.

Change is Happening!
Seasonal change is happening in lots of different ways all across the globe. What clues in your home town tell you that a new season is approaching? Look, smell, feel, and listen carefully.

Now is the time to take a few minutes to go outside and draw, photograph, and/or write about changes you see. Do it often, and especially on September 22, the fall equinox, (or as close as you can). Go outside exactly one month later and see how things have changed. We'll send a monthly reminder.

What is Phenology?

Phenology is the study of the seasonal timing of life cycle events. For instance, in the fall, animals migrate or hibernate and plants die or go dormant. The timing of these events is affected by day length, temperature, and rainfall.

Outdoor Observations for September
Students can keep weekly observations, drawings, and checklists in this
Signs of Fall journal.
What is happening to your daylight hours as summer winds down? Pay close attention to the hours of sunlight (photoperiod). Changing sunlight from month to month is the basis for all other seasonal changes! Record your observations on one of these handouts:

  • Watching the Seasons Change (K-3) >>
  • Fall Phenology Checklist (grade 4+) >>

Read what other students have reported by visiting any of Journey North's maps. Click on the "I" tool and then on a dot (report) to read comments.
