Countdown to Mystery Class: Five Months to Go!

Welcome to Mystery Class 2011-2012
Mystery Class is a global game of hide-and-seek. Students follow sunlight clues to find ten secret sites located around the world. As students solve the mystery, they discover the reasons for seasons.

Join us this year for one of Journey North's all-time favorite projects. Watch for monthly "Countdown to Mystery Class" messages to help you and your students get ready for the Mystery Class challenge.

Mystery Class begins January 30, 2012.

The next Countdown to Mystery Class will be posted October 1, 2011.

How Can I Prepare Students? Track Changes in Daylight

Explore how daylight changes in your part of the world as the Earth revolves around the Sun. Share and compare observations with people around the globe. Begin recording daily sunrise and sunset times. As students examine the sunrise/sunset data, have them calculate changes in photoperiod.

  • Ask Questions: How do students explain the changes in day length? Their explanations will reveal what they know—and what they are ready to discover—about the relationship between sunlight and seasonal change.

Report to the Map!

Photoperiod is the length of time between sunrise and sunset.
