Journal: Learning from Citizens Scientist Observations

It was a cold January! Each time a cold front moved across the continent, people reported hundreds and thousands of robins. Where were the robins and what were they doing? Here's a sample:

  • Texas: Hundreds of robins blanketed the neighborhood eating juniper berries. I can't count them because the tree canopy and sky are full of robins.
  • Florida: Robins in the hundreds feeding on a red holly berries. The large holly trees (40+ feet tall) were stripped bare of berries by the robins!
  • Oklahoma: We received a winter storm of ice and snow three days ago. There are possibly 200 robins in the bare trees, on the ground, and flying everywhere.

Taken together, the observations people made in January provide a good snapshot of robin behavior in the wintertime. What can you learn by reading the observations?
