Update: April 16, 2009
Welcome to the Journey North Tulip Garden Study!

Tulips are blooming in many parts of the continent, but look where storms are producing snow on April 15!

Maps and Highlights

While most gardeners have witnessed their tulips emerging, a handful is still waiting. Some gardeners will even see more snowfall this spring.

As daylength increases and ground temperatures warm up, events of springtime happen quickly. Keep your eyes on the garden and record changes you see in and around it.

"Our tulips have bloomed during our spring break. We planted 175 bulbs and 148 emerged and 94 bloomed. The resident bunny seems to have had a very good feast since we are finding 54 nibbled tulips." Gardnerville, NV 04/06/09

Highlights:

"Imagine our surprise to return to school after the Easter Break and another snowstorm, to find our tulips emerged!" Miramichi, NB 04/14/09

"We planted 15 tulip bulbs and on Monday we noticed that 14 were blooming. We wowed and screamed when we saw the tulips because they were bright colors (red, yellow, green, purple and black)." Bellbrook, OH 04/06/09

"Two of our tulips have suffered a tragic fate, they were eaten by an unknown animal and we don't think that they will bloom. To protect our tulips from animals we placed netting over the tulips. Many students think that the netting was inhibiting the growth of their tulips." Fort Leavenworth, KS 04/14/09

"Today, several (5-6) tulips are blooming in my Journey North tulip bed, even though it is colder (43 degrees) and windier than yesterday. Our spring has been very pleasant with several warm days followed by cool days, and then warming up again." Council, ID 04/14/09
Focus: Phenology in the Neighborhood

Celebrate spring with a phenology hike. Learn to look for signs of spring in and out of the tulip garden. On the day their tulip bloomed, one class in Midland, MI, took a walk around their neighborhood. They recorded what they saw.

Idea: Tracking Garden Progress with a Visual Punch

How can you make a visual record of your tulip garden's progress through the season? Take a look at how teacher Mark Gullickson and his students track tulip growth in their Journey North garden. Gullickson uses this system with his students at Central Elementary School in Albany, OR.
