A big “Thank You” to Peter Nye and Glenn Hewitt for another season tracking bald eagles in New York State and beyond. Mature eagles often return to the same nesting site year after year. Will our eagles nest in the same site this year? Study the maps and watch the behavior of U21 and U25. Can you predict where they will spend their busy summer and fall months?

As we watch bald eagles U21 and U25 push toward their nest sites this week we wonder what is in store for them for the rest of the spring and summer. Will they return to their 2006 nests? Peter Nye believes the timing of an eagle’s departure is a clue to its ultimate destination. This week test his theory using the map as a tool. And join “Eagle-eye” Nye out in the field where he safely fits an eagle with a satellite transmitter.

The eagles have really spread across the NE quadrant of the map. Just as our eagles head on their northward migration, we have some eagles eager to be put on the map. Study the map closely and use your magic wand to move the eagles into position! Eagles will soon be doing the serious work of raising another generation. What jobs do the male and female eagles do, and what can you learn about their busy life in the nest?

The Bald eagles are racking up the miles so far this spring! Each of our eagles has a different kind of spring migration. Eagle Expert Pete Nye is getting ready to visit all the New York nest sites. He will climb those tall trees and peek into the nests. This work is essential for the research he has conducted for years. Join him with a new slideshow and learn more. Just a quick update today to give you the latest data for your map. Study the map, or add the new data to your own map. This week we wonder how much the cold spring weather is affecting the eagles. U25 and U27 seem to be stopped in their tracks. U21 has a different plan. Gather clues from last year’s spring migration to predict where she will go in the coming weeks.

They’re off to Canada! There is no doubt that the migration is underway now. Will they continue on their same migration paths? Their wings take them long distances each year. Watch a slideshow to learn about simple but important feathers. Show what you have learned with a creativMe assessment tool. Create your own eagle portfolio!

Satellite tracking tells us the eagles are on their way! The map shows us all three eagles have spent time in the same location this season. Where? What is special about this place? You'll find out! Just a quick update today to give you the latest data for your map. Study the map, or add the new data to your own map.

It’s officially springtime and the eagles are moving! U21 and U25 have started their spring migration north. Come study the maps and predict which route they will take this year. We take a closer look at U21 and compare the start of her migration with what she did last year at this time. Learn how important the time stamp on each data point is to Peter Nye’s critical habitat studies and try a hands-on approach to solving GMT!

Just a quick update today to give you the latest data for your map and some news from Peter Nye. Study the map, or add the new data to your own map. Track U27 to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Why are eagles attracted to this wintering area? When will U27 depart that area? Does the cold weather have anything to do with it?

Not a lot of eagle movement this week. Peter Nye reports the resident NY eagles are already sitting on nests. What do you wonder about nesting behavior? Make a list and check it off when you learn. Watch a live eagle’s nest to learn more! This week we focus on eagle U27. Read about her capture and see it on video. And read what “Eagle-eye” Nye thinks has happened to V98.

Where are the eagles? Does it look like they are waiting out winter? Were the eagles affected by the big winter snowstorm that hit the NE 2 weeks ago? Follow U25 on her continued travels to help you find the answer. And remember it’s time for you to ask the Bald Eagle Expert, now! Find out all about it in this week’s update.

It's mid-February and our birds aren't moving too much yet. Watch the map closely these next few weeks. Where will they travel within
their winter range? Meanwhile get to know U25 better. Last spring Peter Nye tracked her on the long journey to her nesting grounds — thanks to her backpack satellite transmitter. Will she repeat that journey this spring? Stay tuned!

How do you define eagle migration? Watch each eagle’s movements carefully this season to learn more. Will they simply travel from breeding grounds to wintering grounds and then back this spring? Let satellite technology offer you some insight through this week’s map and data!

Welcome to the Bald Eagle Migration study! Meet biologist Peter Nye. He joins us for the 13th year! This week we’ll catch up with our 4 satellite-tracked adult eagles. Where have they been? Use the fall migration map to follow the birds back to their wintering grounds. And stay tuned: "I think it is going to be a busy and exciting year, so fasten your seat belts and get ready to do some thinking!" says Nye.

Welcome to the Bald Eagle Migration Study: Starts in February
“ Eagle Eye” Pete Nye will back for his 13th season with Journey North! Nye tracks eagles migration by satellite and shares his data with students as the eagles fly. Get ready for the trip! >>
